Law Lecturer

Dr Catrin Fflûr Huws is a lecturer in law at Aberystwyth University. Catrin's expertise is in the field of linguistic equality, with particular regard to the legal status of the Welsh Language. She completed her PhD thesis at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth in 2006 on the use of the Welsh language in the courts, and has since published work on affordable housing and Welsh-speaking communities, the challenges of bilingual law-making and statutory interpretation and the constitutional consequences for the legal system of failing to consider the equal status of the two languages. Catrin has been the Chairperson of the Centre for Welsh Legal Affairs at Aberystwyth University since 2007 and has led the department's research into the question of whether there is a distinct Welsh perspective on general legal questions within the common legal system of England and Wales and ensuring that Welsh legal developments are placed in the wider context of developments at the UK, European and International levels. In 2007, the Centre edited the first ever fully bilingual law journal, and in 2015, it will produce a volume of the Cambrian Law Review dedicated to Welsh law. She compiles the devolution bibliography, which serves as a comprehensive source of material on UK devolution. Catrin has also written a textbook, Text, Cases and Materials on Equity and Trusts, and is currently co-authoring the first Welsh language textbook on the subject.
